POKER ODDS
Outs: The number of cards left in the deck that will improve your hand. Pot Odds: The odds when analyzing the current size of the pot vs. your next call. Bet Odds: The odds you get as a result of evaluating the number of callers to a raise. Implied Odds: The odds you are getting after “assuming the result” of betting for the remainder of the hand.
Pot odds are what you use to calculate whether a certain play has a positive expected value. It is defined as the relationship between the size of the pot and the bet. For instance, if the pot is $100 and you bet $20, the pot odds are 5 to 1. In order to calculate your pot odds, you must know how many outs your hand has at that moment. For example, if you flop a flush draw with 2 overcards you then have 15 outs to make your hand. There are suited cards in total. You hold 2 and the flop came with 2, which leaves 9 of the same suit in the stack, and there are 6 pearing cards to your overcards. If you refer to the table below, you will notice that you have a 54.1% chance of hitting a hand with 15 outs on the turn and river combined. This means that betting $20 to win anything over a $34 pot is the correct play.
In general, every out gives you about a 4% chance of hitting on the turn and river combined. For example, 10 outs gives you about a 40% chance of improving, 12 outs about 48%, etc. When you are down to just the river card, that percentage is cut in half.
