5 Card Draw Poker Rules
Draw Poker is the original form of Poker and it is the form from which all other Poker games are derived. Each table has a maximum of 8 players. The essence of Draw Poker is that the player builds a hand from 5 cards. After the initial round of betting the player may discard some or all of their cards and receive replacements. Another round of betting takes place and then the showdown. During the game, all cards are dealt and discarded face down. While American folklore is filled with 5 Card Draw, it is fairly uncommon these days in the casinos.
Fixed Limits The following are common limits in most poker rooms that have this game: $.05/$.10 (Online), $.25-$.50 (Online), $.50-$1(Online), $1-$2 (Online), $2-$4 (Online), $3-$6 (Brick and Mortar Casinos), $4-$8 (Online), $5-$10 (Brick and Mortar Casinos), $8-$16; (Online), $10-$20 (Brick and Mortar Casinos), $15-$30 (Brick and Mortar Casinos), $20-$40 and above (Online, Brick and Mortar).
Buy-In and Bankroll Your minimum 5 Card Stud Buy-In is typically 10-times the low limit, or $20 for a $2-$4 game. But we recommend you buy in with 50 times the low limit, or $100 in a $2-$4 game. Adjust your table to suit your bankroll. We recommend $2-$4 limit tables or less for players who have logged less than 50 hours real money play time at 5 Card Draw.
Draw Blinds: The blinds are a bet/ante related to the small bet. The Small Blind is one half the small bet rounded down to the nearest dollar or even denomination while the Big Blind is equal to the small bet. In online poker rooms for example:

Posting to Enter a Game A new player can enter a game in the big blind position to avoid paying the new player post, which is equivalent to the big blind. A new player can choose to post the equivalent of the big blind to enter the game at any time except when he is between the button and the big blind position. A returning player who has missed the big blind or small blind can choose to post the missed blinds and reenter the game, as long as he is not between the button and the big blind position. A seated player who has missed the blinds or a player just sitting down can always choose to wait for the blind, that is, sit out until the blind gets to him.
Betting Order Just as the cards are dealt in a specific order and betting also takes place in a specific order. The order is as follows:
Blinds The small blind is a forced bet made by the player to the immediate left of the dealer button (when you are viewing the table from behind the button). It is ½ the small denomination of the table, therefore, in a $2-$4 table it is $1. The big blind is a forced bet made by the player to the immediate left of the small blind. It is equivalent to the small denomination at the table, therefore, in a $2-$4 table it is $2.
First Round After the players in the blind positions put their blinds into the pot, the dealer deals five cards to each player, at which time each player can see his own cards but not those of his opponents. On the first round only, the betting starts with the player to the left of the big blind, who has one of three choices, call, raise, or fold his cards. On the first round only, a player cannot check (make no bet) and still retain his hand. In the first round, the player in the small blind position acts after the button. The player in the big blind position acts after the small blind. Each player then has the option to call (post same bet as big blind), raise (double big blind bet), or fold during this round.
Discard After the first round of betting, active players are offered the opportunity to draw to their hands. That is, they can discard to change or improve their five-card hands by replacing none, some, or all of their cards.
Second Round On the second round, the betting starts with the first active player to the left of the button, who has one of three choices: check, bet, or fold. Until there is a bet, each succeeding active player has the same choices. Once a bet is made, each succeeding player then has, in turn, one of three choices: call, raise, or fold.
Showdown After the Bets and Raises have been resolved, the remaining players enter the Showdown. The opener reveals his pocket cards. If a player wishes to compete with this hand they too reveal their pocket cards, or they can yield and muck out (Fold). At the casino it's the dealer's responsibility to call the winner, as determined by the best 5-card hand under normal Poker rules. In online games, the software will designate the winner and the pot will be passed to them.
Insufficient Cards In the event insufficient cards remain to complete the hand, the mucked and discarded cards are shuffled and used to complete the hand.
