Puggy Pearson

Walter Clyde "Puggy" Pearson grew up in Tennessee in a large family with nine siblings. Pearson joined the service at age 17. Already known as one of the best pool players in the world, he began playing poker and gambling while in the U.S. Navy. Pearson orinated the idea of Poker Tournaments which were later brought to fruition by Benny Binions of Binions Casino, who founded the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Originally named "freezeout tournaments," Puggy is considered the father of todays poker tournaments.

Puggy Pearson has a total of 4 WSOP bracelets, two of which were in seven-card stud, which was considered his best game. Pearson won the 1973 World Series of Poker main event when his A♠ 7♠ defeated Johnny Moss' K♥ J♠. While his best game was 7 Card Stud, Pearson plays all games against any opposition. His trademark is an erratic temperament, a huge cigar and a colorful game style that almost always draws a crowd of onlookers. Pearson is known as one of the all-time aggressive players.

In 1987, Pearson was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame at the age of 58.
