Phil Ivey
Soon after turning 21, he set to prove himself to the greater poker world. If you've tuned in to watch the World Series of Poker on ESPN or the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel, then no doubt you have seen Phil Ivey. He is arguably the best poker player around; the only thing separating him from greatness is winning the World Series of Poker Main Event. He often places high, but hasn't won the big one yet. Phil is young, smart and aggressive. His intense stare-downs of opponents is done so that his opponent might think that Phil has the better hand, so they don't call or re-raise his bet. Sometimes Phil will bluff at the wrong time and get caught, but overall, his ultra-aggressive style of play normally gives him a big stack of chips.
In 2000, he played in the World Series of Poker, where he made two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At that final table, he outlasted a star-studded field that included "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliott, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr. In 2002, Ivey had a breakthrough year, winning three WSOP bracelets. His wins came in three different games: Seven-Card Stud, Stud Hi/Lo, and SHOE (a rotation of Stud, Hold 'em, Omaha, and Stud Hi/Lo), proving Ivey's all-around mastery. Phil had a strong 2003, placing 10th in the World Series of Poker, 2nd in the World Poker Open, and 3rd in the World Poker tour championship last April. In 2005, while playing a sparse tournament schedule, Ivey made two final tables in World Poker Tour events and two in WSOP Circuit events. Then in June, he won his fifth WSOP bracelet in a $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event. Most recently, Phil won two back-to-back tournaments in Monte Carlo - the Monte Carlo Millions tournament and the "The FullTiltPoker.Net Invitational Live from Monte Carlo."
I love poker. I love everything about it. It's the greatest game in the world. I'm always trying to improve and always thinking about getting better. --Phil Ivey
